Cornerstone's mission is simple: to provide a Christ-centered, nurturing, and academically rigorous education to the children of Washington, D.C., equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become leaders who serve others in light of Christ and His Truth. Measuring how well we are fulfilling that mission is a little more complicated.
In the midst of the summer grind -- hiring teachers, tearing down walls to open up new classroom space, painting, filing, ordering curriculum, etc. -- God has provided signs that our work is not in vain and that our mission is being met.
I attended a graduation party where one of our new graduates informed me that she had just learned that her college of choice will be giving her an academic scholarship that will cover both her tuition and her room and board! Without this, she probably would not have been able to attend. Praise God!
A few days later, one of our high school students came to the school to share with the staff a video of her baptism, noting, "while I was already a Christian, I did this as a sign of my obedience to God and as a witness to my fellow students that I am a new person." Praise God!
I am so thankful to see how these students are continuing to thrive academically and spiritually during their time away from school. Thanks to our teachers, mentors, partners, and others who pour into our students academically and spiritually throughout the year. I am especially thankful for National Community Church, Difference Makers Church, FCA DC and Rickey Bolden -- all of whom went above and beyond the call to host various retreats, missions weeks, and leadership trainings for our students during the year and especially over this past summer!
God is good!
