Meet our Upper School Principal, Jonathan Powell
Jonathan Powell serves as Cornerstone’s 7th-12th grade Principal. Twenty years ago (Fall 2006) Mr. Powell began his Cornerstone career as a Phys. Ed. teacher and has served in numerous roles over the past two decades.
In his role as Dean of Students, Mr. Powell launched the Cornerstone House System which fosters community by empowering student leaders to mentor and invest in underclassmen through fun social events, friendly competitions, and service projects. Mr. Powell also piloted Cornerstone’s Athletics program, and led us to 7 championships during his time as Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach.
As a native Washingtonian, Mr. Powell embodies Cornerstone’s K - life approach to education. Over the years, he has fostered real world connections between the classroom and workforce by employing young, aspiring entrepreneurs in his small businesses. Walking with dozens of students on their educational journey from elementary school to college and career has been one of the greatest joys.
Mr. Powell also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Thomas Edison State University.
When he’s not strolling through the halls of Cornerstone, Mr. Powell is likely on some outdoor excursion with his family of five. Mr. Powell has been married to his incredible wife Carmen for 14 years, and they’ve been blessed with three amazing children - Amayah, Emberly and Tauren. Their favorite pastimes include enjoying God’s wonders of creation through hiking, canoeing, camping and hanging at the beach as a family.
